Google

Abuse of dominant position

Stakeholders & Context:

  • Acting on behalf of several SMEs adversely affected by Google’s abuse of its dominant position, pursuing stand-alone proceedings before courts in various European countries, based on anti-competitive practices in the digital economy.

Our actions:

  • We coordinated interventions on behalf of several SMEs impacted by different abuses of dominant position committed by Google.
  • We initiated stand-alone proceedings before multiple courts across different countries.
  • Our combined expertise in anti-competitive practices within the digital economy enabled us to reach settlements in line with our clients’ expectations (several million euros).

Our expertise:

  • Google was fined record amounts by the European Commission, including €2.42 billion in 2017 for favoring its Shopping service over competing comparison tools (impacting SMEs), and €1.49 billion in 2019 for AdSense (annulled in 2024), totaling over €8 billion in antitrust cases.
  • Our combined expertise enabled settlements in line with clients’ expectations (several million euros), in the context of post-EU fine civil claims amounting to at least €12 billion in total, illustrating the impact on SMEs in search, advertising, and mobile sectors.
